A 200-kilo gorilla attacked the keeper of the Madrid zoo when she entered her cage just as the animal was getting ready to eat breakfast.
According to El País, the 46-year-old worker had to be transferred to a hospital for various injuries.
The woman entered the cage in an area “inside, limited and with a triple door,” explained the spokeswoman for the Madrid zoo, María José Luis. The 29-year-old gorilla, named Malabo, was getting ready to have his breakfast and, seeing himself surprised, pounced on her.

“He shook her, but without using all the enormous strength of which he is capable with his 200 kilos of weight,” said the spokeswoman.
Several keepers went to the cage and managed to drive the animal away with the smoke from the fire extinguishers. After rescuing his companion, they calmed the gorilla with a tranquilizer dart and brought him inside the facility.
The caregiver was intubated and transferred in serious condition to the San Carlos Clinical Hospital, while the Municipal Police has taken charge of the investigations, as it was an occupational accident.
