CHICAGO COVID-19 TODAY: Business curfew, other bans imposed by Mayor Lori Lightfoot will affect sharp increase in coronavirus cases

CHICAGO (WLS) – The New Chicago Covid-19 ban will take effect Friday, including a business curfew and a ban on indoor service for bars without a food license.

The action by Mayor Lori Lightfoot comes days after the city warned of an increase in COVID-19 cases, with an average of 700 cases a day.

As part of the new rules, bars can no longer have indoor service without a food license. All liquor sales at all establishments should end at 9 p.m.

Non-essential businesses must be closed from 10pm to 6am, essential industries such as grocery stores, pharmacies and take-out restaurants will be allowed to operate.

All Chicago should avoid gatherings of more than six people or any social gatherings after 10 p.m., Mayor Lightfoot said.

“If we need to take further action and go back to Phase 3 or go to the shelter in place, I wouldn’t hesitate to do that.”

Lightfoot added, “I don’t want to put more restrictions in our city. No one does, but I have to do what is right to save lives and if that means getting back on track, I will.”

The move is disappointing for some bar and restaurant owners, who earlier this week said there was no recent increase in the Covid-1 CO case after a meal.

Nick Contonis, owner of Marquee Lounge, one of Chicago’s oldest taverns, has gone numb in 2020.

“You seem to get used to it after a while. This is our third rodeo,” he said.

Cantolonis closed the bar service at Lincoln Park Mainst last night for the third time this year due to a lack of food licenses.

“I think we have to do what is best for society and let the numbers come down,” he mused. “This is the only thing we can do.”

Places like the Marquee Lounge or Rossi north of the river, old haunts that offer no food and no outdoor space options, have been disproportionately affected by regulations to prevent the spread of COVID-19 for Chicago.

“I’m losing a lot of money, but I think the mayor and the governor are trying to do the right thing,” said Dennis McCarthy, Rossi’s owner. “How can I go crazy? I’m worried about my employees getting sick.”

Rossi had been open for four weeks, and tried to trace their contact during that time.

“We have people who come from outside the city who come from Texas, Florida and they don’t want to wear masks, they don’t want to sign, they don’t want to follow the rules,” McCarthy said.

Melvin Brooks, owner of the presidential lounge in Chatham, said the widespread shutdown would be better than the bar owners in the rear endured.

“My 25 clients, we can’t save alone, we can’t turn this virus around,” Brooks said.

Brooks says he paid શહેર 4,400 for a city license to reach the mail on Thursday. An official with the Chicago Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection declined to say whether the city would consider returning those fees.

For a location that can remain open, bar service must end at 9pm and a 10pm curfew has cut off late night sales.

“The business is such a thin margin business that there is an opportunity to turn down every hour to add revenue to top line sales,” said John Eldep of The Fifty / 50 Restaurant Group. “We think it will rob us of our ability to be profitable. And it’s already been tough.”

Chicago Department of Public Health Commissioner Dr. Allison Arwadi said people would often say they were in contact with people at a social gathering that might be on a bar. By contact tracing, bars and restrooms in the city do not have a specific percentage on transmission.

Dr. Ar. “When we investigate a case and do contact tracing, we do not always know the cause,” Arwadi said. “What do we do, when our case happens, we ask ‘Who are you in contact with?'”

Dr Arwadi said large and small gatherings “pose significant health risks.”

“There’s a 30% chance that someone in a group of 25 has a Covid-19. There’s a 50% probability that someone in a group of 50 has a Covid-19. % chance. “

All other restrictions, including a capacity limit of 40% or 50 people within a room or space, remain in place.
