“Chelsea will not go further unless they change goalkeepers”: Jamie Carragher says Frank Lampard has to get rid of Kepa Arrizabalaga … and says the situation reminds him of Jurgen Klopp’s early days in Liverpool
- Kepa Arrizabalaga had a difficult season and had a difficult match at Liverpool
- Jamie Carragher saw the game and believes Chelsea should replace it
- He said it reminded him of the situation as goalkeepers in Jurgen Klopp’s early years.
Chelsea will have a hard time pressing for the Premier League title unless they sign a new goalkeeper, according to Jamie Carragher.
The former Liverpool defender sees comparisons between Frank Lampard’s team and his former team during Jurgen Klopp’s early years, when Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius were his goalkeeping options.
They were unable to win a trophy until they replaced the pair with Alisson, picking up the Champions League in the Brazilian’s first full season before earning the Premier League title this season.
Chelsea will fight to improve unless they replace Kepa Arrizabalaga, says Jamie Carragher
Carragher suggested that it reminded him of Jurgen Klopp’s early years as Liverpool manager.
On Wednesday night, Carragher witnessed Chelsea lose 5-3 to the champions and after starter Kepa Arrizabalaga let five in, he hit Chelsea’s defense.
He told Sky Sports: ‘Chelsea will not go any further unless they change their goalkeeper.
“Going back to the importance of goalkeepers, I look at this Chelsea team and there are many things I like, it reminds me in many ways of the position Jurgen Klopp was in a couple of years ago.”
‘[Lampard] He’s done his best, yes, Frank is still in his early stages, but those big signings can completely transform you as a team.
Loris Karius was Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper for a period in the Klopp club’s tenure
“I still think Chelsea need a defender, you see how many goals they have conceded.” I think a lot of that is because the goalkeeper is totally honest.
“ You see a lot of central halves in Chelsea without seeing a really outstanding one, those are the areas that if they are going to challenge Liverpool and Man City they will have to rectify in the summer.
‘They are the worst team in the league defending corners. This is a huge problem for Chelsea.
‘Yes, Werner is coming in and the Ajax boy is also talking about Havertz. It sounds great and excites fans, but it doesn’t mean anything if those three and certainly that goalkeeper aren’t resolved. ”
Simon Mignolet was also the first choice at Anfield, but both goalkeepers have moved.
Kepa is the most expensive goalkeeper in the world after Chelsea paid £ 71.6 million to sign him from Athletic Bilbao in 2018.
He has struggled to match his price and has conceded more goals per shot than any other Premier League goalkeeper.
The Spaniard made a clear and obvious mistake against Liverpool by ignoring calls from his defenders to pick up a corner of Liverpool that bounced in the area.
Jan Oblak is believed to be Lampard’s main target to replace him, as Chelsea have already signed Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech this summer.
