There was some reason to believe that Activision was finally ready to announce the next Call of Duty game for 2020, but the reveal of Black Ops: Cold War – if that is indeed this year’s game – will wait have to. The mysterious boxes sent to certain streamers and fan websites only seem to contain more tease, instead of a proper announcement. But the latest development – a teaser website – may point to some sort of news coming out on August 14th.
An announcement has remained difficult for a while now, but that accelerated recently. The latest update to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Warzone added a suspicious Black Ops-like teaser that would appear randomly at games, and some sites began receiving packages from Activision with content embargoes for today. We got one of our own – see some images below – while sites like Charlie Intel got them too. In all cases, these are slide projectors with different slides, although the specific slides seem to differ per outlet.
What’s in the box?
These images are not exactly a Black Ops: Cold War logo as a fact sheet – instead they include what looks like satellite images, maps and assortment letters. There is nothing explicitly detailed about what to expect from the new Call of Duty game or even when to expect an announcement. After all, fans will dig into it to discover some secrets that await. We will report back as more appear, although technical issues have made aspects of this process more challenging than you might expect. Charlie Intel had issues with slides that were out of focus, while Chaos’ unit appears to have a broken light.
While trying to figure out how the slides do not appear ~ blurry ~, we set them up against white light to see it a little closer.

Summit Map Connection
Further analysis of these images has revealed that one is very similar to the multiplayer map Summit, which was previously seen in several of the Black Ops games. Certain slides also resemble elements on the Summit map. This could be purely coincidental, or it could be a deliberate switch to the Black Ops series. There is still nothing definitive to take away from any of this, but it is possible that there is even more to be found.
Treyarch Teases
Perhaps in response to the creation of the Summit connection, Treyarch’s official Twitter account has changed the cover photo. Charlie Intel notes that these are the mountains behind the Summit map.
Next, Treyarch’s Instagram account posted a story with the image above. It’s another mystery, though the Hangman-esque lines at the bottom might point to yet another teaser, in the form of a web page.
CoD 2020 Teaser Website
Players have unveiled pawntakespawn.com, which is a URL that would fit into the Instagram story above. The site is home to a (mostly) static image of some old technology, including a television and computer. There’s also a flash time that lasts 12:00, but stare at it long enough, and you’ll be “08-14.” That may point to some sort of reveal this Friday, August 14th. If so, we will have to wait a few more days for the big unveiling. There may be other hints in the image – for example, the background contains what looks like a map, possibly from Warzone – but so far nothing concrete has come up.
While Black Ops: Cold War is expected to add its Call of Duty campaign and new multiplayer elements this year, Warzone has been here for a long time. Activision has already indicated that the free-to-play mode will eventually stick and adapt alongside each new release of the game. That is in part, no doubt, to the massive success of Warzone. It has led to a massive player counting and soaring revenue for Activision.
