Three days after the state stopped giving 330,000 doses of the modern COVID-19 vaccine due to reports of an allergic reaction, California public health officials announced that “there is no scientific basis for the suspension to continue.”

The previously suspected flour, Moderna 041L20A, represents a one-week dose for the state. Humboldt County Public Health had 4,100 doses of its batch in its freezer and had already given some doses to local residents, a public health official said. According to Ian Hoffman.

California State Epidemiologist Dr. Erica Page issued the following statement late Wednesday, advising providers to resume vaccine use immediately:

Our top priorities are to ensure that vaccines are safe and effective, and distributed evenly and efficiently.

Out of extreme caution, we recommend that providers stop the delivery of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine Lot 41L20A on Sunday evening. Yesterday, we called the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup and additional allergy and immunology experts to examine the evidence gathered. We had further discussions with the County San Diego Department of Public Health, the FDA, the CDC and the manufacturer, and found no scientific basis for continuing the break. Providers who have suspended vaccine administration from Moderna Lot 41 L20 may resume immediately.

These findings should continue to reassure California that vaccines are safe and effective, and that systems are put in place to ensure vaccine safety is rigorous and science-based. My family members who have qualified to receive the vaccine as health care workers or because of their age have already received the COVID-19 vaccine, and I encourage everyone in California to get vaccinated.
