Get ready, it’s time to experience the college world football world.
No. 18 Coastal Carolina is at the top of 13-2 BYU, 22-17, down for the final game of the game in Saturday night’s unbeaten fight.
Quarters back Zack Wilson went down to Coastal Carolina’s 18-yard line with 0:02 left in the game when the Cougars completed a Dex Mille pass near the goal line. Milne was brought down by a crowd of defenders on a 1-yard line, sealing a wild win for the Chanticlers.
BYU has its drive 0:55 left and has started on its own 18-yard line with a timeout. A penalty on the first play pushed the Cougars to their own 9-yard line, and then Wilson went to work. He completed five of his seven pass attempts on the drive for seven yards, a yard short of completing a miraculous comeback.
Coastal Carolina’s defense prevented the country’s No. 4 scoring offense, as BYU averaged 47.6 points per game in Saturday’s match. Offensively, the Chanticliers ran for 281 yards and took control of the average running line of 5.2 yards per carry to take a big advantage in the occupation period (37:51 compared to BYU’s 22:09).
At halftime, BIU, 14-13, led and kicked the field goal in the early drive of the third quarter before getting full grounding for the rest of the game. In his four drives before the end of the game possession, the Cougars averaged 35 yards with just two first landings in 17 plays, punishing three times and slapping once.
The end of the first half got a little chippy. Wilson’s Hale Mary attempt was blocked on the second play of the second quarter, and two Coastal defenders took cheap shots at Wilson as the interception was blocked. The benches were cleared as both teams were found in the middle of the field, although the situation was fine without throwing any flags.
The meeting between BYU and Coastal Carolina was scheduled for the middle of the week after the Chanticlers were unable to play due to Saturday’s original opponent – Liberty – COVID-19 issues. The two schools reached an agreement to play on Wednesday, creating an uninterrupted match between the two undefeated, top-20 teams.
