Bryson DeChambeau really rocked the fences in the second round at the Memorial. This time it was expensive.
The outsized American, who has garnered attention with an oversized body and swing that sends the ball nearly 200 mph (322 km / h) from the club and often more than 400 yards (366 meters) from the tee, was even even. the second round when a hole ruined everything.
He made a 10 in the 15th par five, his highest score in the nearly 6,000 holes he has played in his career on the PGA Tour. He left the Memorial with rounds of 73-76, and without comment.
DeChambeau’s troubles started when he pulled his 15th par 5 tee shot out of a tree and into the stream to the left of the street.
That was not the problem. He took a penalty and then hit a fairway metal from 289 yards away. He sailed into a backyard and rolled down the hill next to the temporary fence surrounding the property.
Then she hit him again. This one was fine in the same backyard.
It wasn’t over. A third shot went in that direction, but not so far.
He rolled past the cart path and was in more trouble when he stopped just before a stream.
DeChambeau thought he had a chance to play the first shot when he saw him near the fence.
He called a rules officer, who told him that he was considered out of bounds because he was out of a line between the two posts, by inches.
“If you had a white post here, even if it was on the trailing edge of the post … I don’t think so. Can I get a second decision? Please? “DeChambeau said.
When the official called for reinforcements, DeChambeau was heard on the broadcast saying, “They are giving me a crappy decision as usual.”
Another official, Ken Tackeett, arrived and calmly explained the rules for the fence, which has posts inserted into the ground and smaller posts between them, the decorative variety.
“From my point of view, that would technically still be there,” DeChambeau told him. “I want to know if I could jump over the fence and hit it.”
DeChambeau in heated debate with officials
He referenced Phil Mickelson one year at Bay Hill. In that case, it was a chain link fence, which was considered the boundary, and Mickelson was able to cut it. That did not work very well for Lefty. And it didn’t apply to DeChambeau.
The final decision, he grabbed the ball, cut the one near the stream on the green, and took two putts for a 10. That took him from 1 in the tournament – two shots inside the cut line – to 6 and short week
DeChambeau came to the Memorial as arguably the best golf player, with 19 consecutive rounds on par or better, and seven consecutive top 10s. That included a win in his last start to the Rocket Mortgage Classic, which he submitted to with his powerful impulses.
That week was not without problems. During the third round, he got cranky with a camera and for filming him after he hit a poor shot that led to the ghost.
After the Detroit round, he said: “I understand that it is your job to videotape me, but at the same point, I think we should start protecting our players here compared to showing potential vulnerability and damaging someone’s image.” I just don’t think it’s necessarily the right thing to do. “
“We don’t want to say anything with that, we only really care about the game,” he added.
“For that to harm our brand in that way, that’s not good in the way we act because if you really know me in person, I’m not that bad, I don’t think so.”
Such a moment did not happen on Friday.
After hitting his tee a little long on par 3 16, his caddy approached the camera and blocked his view.
