Bryson DeChambeau is the villain the PGA Tour needs

The PGA Tour can be a very tasteless place where tasteless people win tasteless tournaments that mix together like a big tasteless ball. Just look at Dustin Johnson, one of the world’s best players and infallible Hall of Fame, who won last week and barely clenched his fist after sinking his winning putt.

I mean, players like that make the game of golf boring to watch sometimes.

Do you know who doesn’t make the game boring, for better or for worse? Bryson DeChambeau … and he is exactly what the Tour needs right now.

The bulky 26-year-old protein shake won his sixth PGA Tour tournament on Sunday, scoring a 3-stroke victory with a final round of 7 under 65 in the Rocket Mortgage Classic. His driving distances continue to be a cheat code on the Tour and this week he broke one of Tiger Woods’ records with that driver.

He also upset a lot of people over the weekend when he got mad at a CBS cameraman for filming him while he was upset during his third round. He was criticized for that because, duh, you’re playing a sport on television and it’s the broadcast’s job to film you and show you what you’re doing, both for good times and bad times. That’s the job DeChambeau signed up for and in no way did the cameraman do something wrong.

But that’s it: The game of golf needs a villain, someone who is a public enemy every weekend and who has people supporting and against him. It adds more excitement to tournaments and makes the PGA Tour more fun and less bland, which is fantastic.

How did DeChambeau react to critics after his victory on Sunday? He said, “I love everyone.”

I mean, how cool is that? That is a perfect villain.

DeChambeau quarantined about 30 pounds of muscle and mass and perfected a powerful swing from the tee like we’ve never seen before. 360-yard drives and rotating green wedges are becoming a very normal thing for DeChambeau. Oh, and his wedge game has been smelly the past three weeks, but that hasn’t slowed him down at all. Can you imagine when he launches that part of his game?

Look. Outside.

The PGA Tour is full of players who will not show any kind of emotion, making it difficult to create a connection as a fan of any of the players. Golf is at its best when Tiger Woods is going crazy over a significant putt, it makes things that much more exciting. That’s exactly what DeChambeau did after plunging a massive putt birdie into the 16th hole on Sunday. That’s what the game needs!

Do you like DeChambeau? No, you don’t fully understand it and I understand it if this is how you feel. But come on, what he is bringing to every event he plays in is so entertaining and different from any other player on the Tour.

I have to wonder what it will do to the Augusta National in November. That might be epic … but it will definitely be entertaining.

The biggest winner of the weekend: illegal fireworks.

These fireworks videos released in Los Angeles on July 4 are amazing. I mean, the residents of my hometown weren’t playing on Saturday night. Absolutely. These views from a news helicopter are incredible.
