Browns’ Mack Wilson says he ‘will be back and better’ after a knee injury

The Cleveland Browns did not provide any new information on Wednesday about the knee injury sustained by linebacker Mack Wilson at practice on Tuesday, but no one made it sound as if the former Alabama standout would soon be back on the field.

That included Wilson, who said via social media that he “would be back and get better with an even bigger chip on my shoulder.”

Reports on Tuesday indicate that Wilson suffered a hyperextended knee that could require surgery before the end of the season. But Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com reported Wednesday night that linebacker and Browns Dr. James Andrews, who is undergoing orthopedic surgery at Birmingham, should investigate the injury. Since a decision on what needs to be done will not be made until the swelling falls, it could take a while before Wilson’s 2020 plans become clear.

Cleveland coach Kevin Stefanski declined to speculate on whether Wilson would need surgery.

“Sad injury there for Mack,” Stefanski said at his press conference Wednesday. ‘I feel for him. I talked to him last night. I really do not know the extent and how long this will take, but I will just make sure we postpone the medical staff. ”

A two-time All-State player at Carver High School in Montgomery, Wilson went from the fifth-round draft pick to second-leading tackler for the Browns in 2019.

In his rookie season, Wilson played more defensive snaps than the rest of the Cleveland linebackers have combined in their NFL careers, except for four-year veteran BJ Goodson.

Stefanski said the Browns would count on their young linebackers, including former Oxford High School standout Tae Davis, to step down while Wilson is sidelined.

“I’m going straight to the roster and just telling you the next man up,” Stefanski said. ‘As we talked about this group earlier, I think there are a lot of good youth and I think there are some really athletic players, and we’m excited about those guys.

‘Do not feel good about the injury to Mack and feel for him. But at the same time, that’s what happens in this game, and it opens up opportunities for others. I would not necessarily say one person about the other at this point. ”
