Britney Spears’s brother reveals that the singer has wanted to leave his guardianship “for quite some time”

Britney Spears’s brother opened up in a rare interview about what it was like to grow up with the pop star and how the family as a whole adjusted as they shot to stardom.

Speaking on the “As NOT Seen on TV” podcast, Bryan Spears, 43, said he was in college when Britney became a household name. Since then, the world watched her collapse in 2007, which subsequently led to her guardianship controlled by her father, Jamie Spears.

Britney’s brother was asked about the latest drama surrounding his guardianship, in which he explained that while it is somewhat beneficial to have him in place, Britney would eventually like to get out of it.

“She has been in this for quite some time. Obviously, there was a need at first,” Bryan said. “Now they have made some changes and all we can do is hope for the best!”

He continued to share that he talks to Britney “constantly” and hinted at her thoughts that someone else was handling her financial affairs.

“She always wanted to get out of it. It’s very frustrating to have it,” Bryan added. “Whether someone comes in peace to help or they come with an attitude, having someone constantly tell you to do something must be frustrating. She has wanted to get out of it for a long time.”

“At first it was difficult. Every time you go through difficulties or whatever and you have to make great adjustments, that is very difficult. What I think helped us overcome it is that we have all been very close all these years,” he said, adding that the family has only had “normal fights.”

“But nothing important where everyone stopped talking. We’ve never had that,” he said.

Jamie reportedly served as Britney’s conservator from 2008 until he resigned in September 2019, citing health issues. While Bryan said he knows his father is still active in conservatorship, he is not sure what his role is at the moment. He reported last fall that Jodi Montgomery, Britney’s care manager, was named temporary conservator while Jamie remains in financial control.

“Overall, he has done his best because of the situation he put it in and we have to work together as a family to keep it running,” Britney’s brother concluded.
