Britney Spears’ father Jamie Spears remains the sole conservator of her estate despite the singer’s request for him to step down from the role.
The singer’s father was checked in 2008 over the welfare and finances of his daughter in 2008 after her well-documented public burglary. He later resigned from a checkpoint in 2019 after battling ill health, leaving her longtime caretaker Jodi Montgomery as temporary conservator.
Earlier this week, reports from the New York Times revealed that Spears’ lawyer had submitted new documents requesting that the role of Montgomery be made permanent, on the grounds that the singer “strongly prefers” to keep her on board alongside financial experts to take care of her estate.
However, a hearing yesterday (August 19) revealed that the status of Britney’s conservatory is not currently maintained.
According to documents obtained by Entertainment Tonight, the hearing was a scheduled conference, with sources also telling TMZ that “certain legal documents must be submitted before their problems go before a judge, and that has not happened”.
It is believed that Britney’s lawyer Samuel Ingham now has until September 18 to file a petition after the conservatory’s temporary letters were extended until February 1, 2021.
The conservatory’s particular character – which has been in place since Britney’s break-in in 2007 – has previously caused concern among her friends, fans and even family.
Jamie Spears recently commented on the conservatory and the fan-started #FreeBritney movement, saying “All these conspiracy theorists know nothing. The world has no clue.”
“It’s up to the California court to decide what’s best for my daughter,” he continued.
