Britney Spears asks the court to limit her father’s power over her

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Britney Spears on Tuesday asked a court to keep her father from the broad control over her life and career he has maintained for most of the last 12 years.

In documents submitted by her judge-appointed lawyer giving a rare public air to the wishes of the 38-year-old pop superstar, she requested that her father not return to the role of curator of her person, which gave him power over them made important life decisions from 2008 to 2019, when he temporarily stepped on the road, citing health issues.

“Britney is strongly against James returning as her person’s curator,” the document says.

James Spears has held his separate role as curator over his daughter’s finances. For the first 11 years of the conservatory, he served as co-conservator with attorney Andrew M. Wallet, who stepped down from the role early last year.

That left James Spears briefly with sole power over Britney Spears’ life, money and career, a situation she says she wants to repeat altogether.

An email seeking comment from James Spears’s lawyer was not immediately returned.

Spears says she wants Jodi Montgomery, who has temporarily served as her person’s curator, to do so permanently, but she says that does not mean she is denying her right to put an end to the entire scheme.

The documents also revealed that Britney Spears has no plans to perform at any time. She last performed live in October 2018, and in early 2019 canceled a planned Las Vegas stay.

The submission gave a rare glimpse into Britney Spears’ own wishes at the conservatory that has had a lot of power over her for more than a decade. She has almost never spoken publicly about the case, and hearings and documents in the case are being secretly shrouded, although she sued the court last year, suggesting she sought changes.

In the papers, Britney Spears praised the conservatory and the work in general, saying that it “saved her from a collapse, exploitation by predatory individuals and financial ruin” and that it made her “capable of her position as entertainer of to get world-class back. ”

The document was submitted a day before a status hearing on the conservatory, expecting it to be closed to the media and the public.

Britney Spears’s lawyer said he expects James Spears to aggressively bet on marginalization, saying Britney Spears has suggested that she retain a lawyer with expertise in complex financial court battles.

The conservatory, known in some states as a caregiver, gave James Spears power over his daughter’s career and much of her personal life, including her relationship with her teenage sons. Spears’ ex-husband Kevin Federline has taken care of the boys, but she has frequent visits with her.
