British Trade Secretary promises to fight ‘unfair’ whiskey tariffs

British Trade Secretary Liz Truss said they would fight ‘unfair’ US tariffs on Scotch whiskey.

Truss made the pledge in an op-ed for the Telegraph published on Sunday. Its piece comes after the US said last week that it would maintain 15% rates on Airbus aircraft and 25% rates on other European Union goods.

“I will fight to earn these unjust tariffs on the back of history,” Truss wrote, beating Brussels because they apparently did not protect British and Scottish interests.

“US tariffs on Scotch whiskey are unacceptable and unfair. I can not be clear about it, “wrote Truss. “Whiskey making is one of our great industries and a jewel in our national crown.”

Britain had earlier demanded that the US reduce its tariffs on Scotch whiskey. Truss said she will bring the matter up with her American counterpart, Robert Lighthizer, as they meet in the coming weeks to discuss tariffs and other issues.

“I firmly believe that free and fair trade remains the best way forward for the world and for Britain,” Truss said.

The United Kingdom, meanwhile, is currently in a transition period, with part of the EU’s tariff – free regime remaining until the end of the year. The future economic relationship has not yet been agreed, which means that tariffs can be imposed on traded goods between the two sides at the beginning of next year – a development that most economists would think would further shake an economy that struggles to repair of the coronavirus pandemic.
