Hall of Famer linebacker Brian Urlacher, Super Bowl champion Travis Kelce and 2014 NFL Offensive Player of the Year DeMarco Murray are part of a group of investors who have joined powerful couple Jennifer Lopez and Alex. Rodríguez in an attempt to buy the New York Mets.
The group has already submitted its initial offer of $ 1.7 billion. Hedge fund billionaire Steve Cohen has so far topped $ 2 billion, according to a New York Post report. Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon would prefer to sell to the Rodríguez-López group if his bid is close to the best bid at the end of the auction, according to the Post.
The group is on standby awaiting news from MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred regarding the next step in the process.
Rodríguez, who last starred with the Yankees, and his fiancé Lopez have put $ 300 million of their own money in the offering. Other investors include future Hall of Fame offensive lineman Joe Thomas, who has spent his entire career with the Cleveland Browns, two-time All-Star Bradley Beal of the Washington Wizards and Denver Nuggets center Mason Plumlee.
“Being a former athlete and having the opportunity to be part of a group trying to buy a professional team is great,” Urlacher told ESPN on Monday. “It is especially great to be involved with Alex. Alex is the man. You have Kelce, Joe Thomas, DeMarco Murray. It is great to be in a group with them.”
Chiefs tight end Kelce “This is a crazy opportunity. I had the opportunity to meet Alex Rodríguez a couple of years ago and I told him how fanatic he was as a child of his. I am so grateful for the success that I have had in the NFL, having an opportunity like this crosses the table. I couldn’t think of a more unique group of people to be in charge of this.
“Alex Rodríguez and Jennifer López are a couple full of stars who have gotten to where they are because they work hard. And they are good human beings. I thank you for allowing me to be part of this.”
Rodríguez was a 14-time All-Star during his baseball career with the Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers and Yankees. He was a three-time American League MVP, 1996 batting champion, and 2009 World Series champion.
Jim Cantelupe, co-founder of Summit Trail Advisors, organized the group.
