A total of 1,588 new coronavirus cases were reported in the Canadian province of Nantario on Saturday, with CNN affiliates identified as “the most seen in epidemics so far,” according to government figures.

The province also reported 21 virus-related deaths on Saturday.

In Nantario, 5,113 coronavirus patients are now hospitalized, including 1,146 in intensive care units and 87 on a ventilator.

The increase in cases comes as the country’s largest city, Toronto, is set to hold a lockdown on Monday to limit the spread of Covid-1 the.

The downdown will last at least 28 days and includes the Peel region, which is part of the Greater Toronto area.

“We can’t afford province-wide lockdowns, so we’re taking preventive measures today by moving Toronto and Peel to lockdown-level sanctions and higher-level sanctions in other regions,” Wendario Premier Doug Ford said Friday.

These lockdown rules are:

  • According to the release, indoor social gatherings or events will not be allowed except for members of the same household, and outdoor gatherings will not be limited to more than 10 people, according to the release.
  • Wedding services, funerals and rituals where physical distance can be maintained inside or outside the home will also be limited to more than 10 people.
  • Retail will only be allowed to operate for curbside pick-up or delivery. Some businesses, such as grocery stores and pharmacies, will be allowed to open at 50% capacity.
  • Schools and child care will remain open, and post-secondary education will go into virtual education without training that can only be provided individually.

According to the release, other parts of the province will move towards higher-level sanctions starting Monday.
