Boston ‘Cheers’ bar closes due to coronavirus

Making your way into the world today has proven to be impossible for many restaurants because the coronavirus pandemic has reduced their business.

The iconic bar “Cheers” in Boston’s Faneuil Hall will close on August 30 after nearly 20 years in business.

The bar, which opened in 2001, is a replica of the original Bull & Finch Pub on Beacon Street that inspired the hit TV shows that aired from 1982 to 1993.

The sitcom’s run of 271 episodes features Ted Danson as bar owner Sam Malone and garnered dozens of Emmy wins and more than 100 nominations.

The location of Faneuil Hall made it a popular stop for tourists visiting Boston. It includes a number of items from the show, and it offers a selection of “Cheers” merchandise in addition to a menu of bar fare and specialties in New England.

COVID-19, however, forced the restaurant to close from March to June.

Bar founder Tom Kershaw said the pandemic and a lack of assistance from the bar’s landlord “made this current challenge insurmountable,” Boston.com reported.

Cheers is not the only food that is permanently shut down as a result of the pandemic. Major national chains such as McDonald’s, Dunkin’s and Pizza Hut have announced hundreds of closures in the past month alone, FOX Business reported earlier.

Review website Yelp said more than 15,000 restaurants had closed their doors permanently as a result of the July 10 pandemic.

The good news for ‘Cheers’ fans is that they have another place to go. The Beacon Street pub, also now called Cheers, will remain open. It’s been there since 1969. And although it’s not as large as the location of Faneuil Hall, that simply means it’s going to take less time for everyone to know your name.
