When life in the United States almost closed amid the coronavirus pandemic this spring, production on the upcoming season of Netflix’s “Queer Eye” stopped in Austin, Texas.

In the months that followed, Bobby Berk, the Fab Five’s resident design expert, put much of his extra energy into yard work, and not just on his own property.

“Outdoor spaces are one of my favorites. Like, my neighbors right now have nicknamed me the Los Feliz Friendly Neighborhood Gardener, because I’ve run out of things to do in my yard, and I’ve started doing other people’s yards, “Berk told Gibson Johns of In The Know recently. “Without asking, I went into Lowes.com, I asked for all my electric herbivores and extra batteries. I’m like, ‘You know, clearly you’re busy and you haven’t taken care of your garden … so I’ll do it for you, I have nothing else to do. ‘”

“I love doing things outdoors,” he added. “I grew up in the field, I grew up with gardening. It gives me back, it warms my soul.

While Berk was clearly excited to spend more time working outdoors while trapped in his home, he also admitted in In The Know that, without “Queer Eye,” he missed amazing people with created spaces.

So this month, Bobby partnered with Lowe’s to fill that void using his love of outdoor work: Five couples who had been forced to postpone their original June weddings received surprise inquiries from the Netflix star, who It helped them design perfect wedding venues with their own outdoor spaces.

“I haven’t been filled with amazing people with the design recently,” Berk laughed. “So it was fun doing it. […] These spaces will be spaces that you can continue using throughout the year. “

In addition to having newly renovated spaces to enjoy, the couples that surprised Berk were also able to hold socially estranged wedding ceremonies that otherwise would not have fulfilled their dream wedding ideas.

“I have so many friends right now whose weddings have been delayed or just decided to cancel it, not the entire wedding, but to cancel the destination wedding, so I thought, ‘This is very close to my heart. It’s so personal right now, it couldn’t be more perfect, ‘”Berk said of the project. “Not to mention that my wedding was a surprise: my husband proposed and planned the wedding the same day, and I was surprised.”

These days, of course, it’s also critical that celebrities think twice about who they’re aligning with, and Berk acknowledges that.

“I line up in a lot of trouble with Lowe’s: They are a great advocate, not only of the LGBTQ community, but also of the Black Lives Matter movement,” he explained. “I like working with companies that think like me.”
