Blackmagic has just introduced the URSA Mini Pro 12K – an 80MP monster from a movie camera that can record 12K RAW videos at up to 60fps. That’s 80 megapixel per frame Captured at 60 frames per second on a Super 35mm image sensor … for less than $ 10,000.
The announcement was made during a live performance first thing in the morning, and it’s really more about this sensor than the camera it’s in.
At the core of the new URSA Mini Pro 12K is a 12,288 x 6480 Super 35 sensor with “the same number of red, green, and blue pixels,” an advertised 14-stop dynamic range, and native ISO of 800. The 80MP sensor can It can be used to record 12K RAW videos at up to 60fps, or you can capture 8K and 4K RAW videos over-sampled at up to 110fps without any cropping or change in your field of view.
The point is not necessarily to produce 12K content, which no one can see anyway, but to produce the highest quality and most versatile footage possible for “4K, 8K color, inlay, composition, reframing, stabilization and tracking” .
Blackmagic really brings this versatility argument home in its announcement, praising the URSA Mini Pro 12K as “multiple cameras in one.”
“With a whopping 80 megapixels per frame at 60 fps in RAW, customers can capture still images and perfect motion shots on a single camera at the same time,” the statement said. “Clients can shoot up to 60 fps in 12K 12,288 x 6480 17: 9. For higher frame rates, clients can shoot at 110 fps at 8192 x 4320, 140 fps at 8192 x 3408 and even place the sensor in the window Super 16 to capture 4K at an incredible speed of 220 fps at 4096 x 2160 DCI. “
To record all that footage, you get two CFast slots with a limit of 900MB / s, two SD UHS-II slots with a limit of 500MB / s, or use the USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 expansion port to record up to 900 MB / s to SATA or NVMe drives.
