Biden team fears no COVID-19 herd immunity until Thanksgiving

According to two senior administration officials, top members of President John Biden’s COWED response team are internally warning that the U.S. Crowds will not be able to reach immunity until Thanksgiving or the onset of winter.

In an interview with CBS News this week, Byden hinted at some of these concerns, and said she would be “very difficult” to reach “before the end of summer” with herd immunity – population-wide resistance to the virus. The current daily rate is about 1.3 million vaccine doses. Other top officials working on the federal government’s response to COVID-19 say they are unhappy about the long-term impact of the vaccine supply and the impact on herd immunity, and possibly the U.S. through a new partnership with outside pharmaceutical companies. Has begun to find ways to expand production capacity.

In addition to supply questions, top health officials say they are increasingly concerned about the Covid-19 variant of the United Kingdom and South Africa, with more varieties likely to come out in the coming months, and those variants likely to survive vaccines. There is some evidence to suggest that both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines protect against the B117 variant of the United Kingdom, although recent studies have shown that new mutations may make vaccines less effective. Data collected by Novavax and Johnson and Johnson Clinical Trials in South Africa indicate that their vaccine is less effective against the rapidly spreading variant in the country. And South Africa recently said it was blocking the rollout of the AstraZeneca vaccine because evidence from clinical trials suggests the vaccine does not work well against variants.
