Biden is taking part in the first Sunday Mass as President



Biden is the second Catholic president in U.S. history and the weekly mass is expected to be a fixed part of his schedule. It is a level of devotion to regular religious services not seen by recent presidents who were claimed to be Christians but worshiped privately when they came to church or were in office.

And while it is unclear whether he will adopt a permanent parish in Washington during his tenure, Biden’s church will provide a window into how his spiritual side aligns with his politics.

Biden was inside the Holy Trinity for at least 35 minutes and went to Sunday service with his grandchildren, Macy and Finnegan, and their son, Hunter, the president. Asked how the service is, he replied, “Lovely.”

Catholicism has been an integral part of Biden’s life, having been a regular at Mass since childhood and attending Catholic schools. He married his late first wife, Neelia, in a Catholic church, and died giving political discourse with references to Scripture, Catholic hymns, and lessons learned from nuns and priests at school.

He frequently used the Holy Trinity during former President Barack Obama’s tenure as vice president. According to the Holy Trinity, the church – the oldest Catholic church in Washington, D.C. – regularly visited the first U.S. Athletic President, John F. Kennedy was also present.

On the morning of their inauguration, Biden and Washington attended a service at St. Matthew the Apostle’s Cathedral in Washington DC, accompanied by four congressional leaders.
