Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson on Thursday echoed the words of Jacob Blake’s mother in remarks about rebellion in Kenosha, Wisconsin, at the Republican National Convention 2020.
Carson is the only black member of President Trump’s cabinet and truncated peace after the police shooting on Blake on Sunday, which triggered nights of looting and arson and the shooting death of two Protestants Tuesday by a 17-year-old gunman with a rifle.
“Our hearts go out to the Blake family, and the other families affected by the tragic events in Kenosha,” Carson said.
“Just as Jacob’s mother loved the country, we choose our hearts, our love and our intelligence to work together to show the rest of the world how people should treat each other. America is great when we love each other To succeed and change, we must first come together and love our citizens. “
Carson also defended Trump’s record on racial issues, noting that he signed the First Step Act of criminal justice, permanent funding for historic black colleges, and a law that encourages investment in poor areas.
‘Many on the other hand maintain division by claiming that President Trump is a racist. They could not be wrong, ‘said Carson. “Years ago, Jesse Jackson gave Donald Trump an award for the economic opportunities he created for Black people. In Palm Beach, Florida, Donald Trump led the crusade to allow blacks and Jews into private clubs and resorts.”
Before Carson, 68, entered politics, he was a neurosurgeon known for successfully separating twins that came together at the head.
Detroit’s native, Mich., Ran for the Republican nomination for president in 2016, but eventually dropped out of the race and threw his support behind Trump.
As HUD secretary, Carson has supported rent increases and advocated for cuts to housing rules. He is also a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force.
The final night of the convention will culminate in Trump accepting the GOP nomination for president live from the White House’s South Lawn.
