PHOENIX – More than 800 businesses in Arizona, including bars, gyms, cinemas, and water parks, have sought approval from the Arizona Department of Health Services to reopen, despite some state benchmarks for those industries not met in certain counties .
Of the 800 applications submitted, 38 companies were approved and dozens were rejected Wednesday night, August 19, 2020, according to Steve Elliott, communications director at ADHS. “ADHD staff check them as quickly as possible,” he said Tuesday in an email.
For those companies that have refused, they can appeal the state’s decision.
Once a company is approved, it can reopen immediately, said Holly Poynter, public information manager at ADHD, in an email on Wednesday, in response to some follow-up questions from ABC15. She said approved companies should follow the guidelines issued by ADHD and the Governor’s Office on August 10 in addition to the benchmarks. Specific benchmarks were issued for cinemas, restaurants, water parks, food bars, and non-food bars.
Here are the specific benchmarks for each sector:
Approved companies located in counties where these benchmarks are not met, such as in Maricopa County, must demonstrate how they can “exceed” the state’s safety requirements, including limiting the number of people, requiring face masks , often cleaning and maintaining social distance.
Here is a list of the current approvals and denials, with effect from August 18th. Duplicate names indicate multiple locations, ADHS said.
