The Milwaukee Bucks led a walkout at Walt Disney World on Wednesday in response to Jacob Blake’s shooting on Sunday, with former President Barack Obama just behind them.
Obama tweeted Wednesday night his support for the Bucks and the rest of the league, one of the countless to do so after a monumental day in NBA history.
‘I praise the players on the Bucks’
Obama tweeted a video of Los Angeles Clippers coach Doc Rivers as he praised the Bucks, the NBA and the WNBA on Wednesday.
The video was Rivers’ emotional interview about shooting and being black in America earlier this week.
‘We will be the ones killed. We will be the ones to be shot, ‘Rivers said, in part. “We are the ones who are refused to live in certain communities. We’re hung up, we’re shot. All you do is listen about fear.
“It’s great for me why we love this country and that this country does not love us.”
Rivers was one of the countless in the NBA to speak out after the shooting and in the days that followed. LeBron James has spoken about it several times and took to Twitter once again on Wednesday after the Bucks ran out.
“People are getting tired of hearing me say that, but we’re scared as Black people in America,” James said after their win against Portland on Sunday night, part of a powerful statement he made. “Black men, Black women, Black children, we are afraid.”
That walkout also provided widespread walkouts around the sports world. The WNBA followed fast pack, as did Major League Soccer and select MLB teams and players. NBA players met late Wednesday night to discuss the future of the season, and the league will hold a special Board of Governors meeting on Thursday.
Both the Los Angeles Lakers and Clippers have voted in favor of ending the playoffs, Yahoo Sports’s source Chris Haynes said. That meeting would end “ugly,” and was both “heated” and “emotional.”
