Bagged salads sold under store brands such as Walmart, Aldi, ShopRite were recalled after more than 600 became ill

Bagged salad mixes sold under the brands of various stores, including Walmart, Aldi and ShopRite, were recalled in 31 states after more than 600 people became ill with parasites in 11 of those states, according to the Administration. Federal Food and Drug Administration.

Salads made by Illinois-based Fresh Express are contaminated with Cyclospora, a parasite that can cause intestinal disease after ingestion.

The outbreak affected 641 people in 11 states, with no reported cases in New Jersey, since the first FDA alert was issued in June. Thirty-seven people have been hospitalized, and there are no reported deaths, the FDA said.

“The FDA traceback investigation is ongoing to determine the cause and source of the outbreak,” the FDA said in an update late last week. “The ingredients in the salad (iceberg lettuce, carrots, red cabbage) are still elements of interest in the research.”

Store brands involved in the recall include ALDI Little Salad Bar, Giant Eagle, Hy-Vee, Jewel-Osco Signature Farms, ShopRite Wholesome Pantry, and Walmart Marketside.

The salads have product code “Z178” or a lower number, and “best before” dates are through July 14, 2020, authorities said.

A complete list of recalled products is available on the FDA website.

If you have a recalled salad in your vegetable drawer, don’t eat it and throw it away, says the FDA. Refunds can be obtained by calling the Fresh Express Consumer Response Center at 800-242-5472, Monday through Saturday from 8 am to 7 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 7 pm
