Avowed, a new first-person RPG from Fallout: New Vegas and creator of The Outer Worlds, Obsidian Entertainment, was announced on today’s Xbox Games Showcase.
With Avowed, Obsidian plunges back into fantasy to rest from science fiction. Set in the world of Eora, which you know is a fantasy world because it ends in a long A, Avowed is much more like Pillars of Eternity and much less like Fallout: New Vegas, at least in terms of setting and themes.
Interestingly, this is Obsidian’s first fantasy first-person RPG. Games like Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny, and Neverwinter Nights 2 were all isometric RPGs, and the studio’s first-person projects have always been a bit of science fiction. The revealed trailer for the game was a bit of exposure and a snippet of first-person gameplay, with our hero brandishing a sword in one hand and a spell in the other, confirming that, yes, it is a fantasy RPG.
“We have always known war,” says the narrator of the trailer. “He forged our empire, turned heroes into kings and queens, and decimated our enemies. Now our oaths are lost, forsaken. Now you must face the monsters that have born our sins. Is the oath worth the weight of a crown? “
Microsoft Studios boss Matt Booty described Avowed as the epic game Obisidan has wanted to make for years, and as a project “built from scratch to take advantage of Xbox Series X.”
After Avowed’s reveal, Obsidian now turns quite a few dishes. In addition to a new fantasy title, she’s also working on the recently announced Peril on Gorgon DLC for The outer worldsas well as the miniature survival creation game Grounded. The studio has come a long way since Fallout: New Vegas and is now positioned as a key creativity for Xbox, and in recent years especially, it has brought its signature wits and writing to unique new genres and worlds of its own making.
