According to media reports, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra will be appointed Minister of Health by the President-elect of the United States, Joe Biden. This was unanimously reported by NBC, New York Times and other US media, citing Biden’s background.

Becerra would be the second Latino in Biden’s cabinet after the already nominated Minister of National Security, Alejandro Mayorkas. He had also been traded as a potential candidate for the United States Department of Justice. Biden had promised to form the most diverse cabinet of all time.

During his time as a congressman, Becerra was a staunch defender of Latino rights. In 2016, the now 62-year-old succeeded Kamala Harris as California Attorney General. At that time he was the first Latino to hold this position.

During his tenure, he campaigned for the so-called Daca program to protect hundreds of thousands of young migrants before the Supreme Court.

Supporter of Obama’s health program

Becerra also spearheaded efforts by several US states and the capital, Washington, against attempts by Republicans to overturn President Barack Obama’s health care reform in court. With “Obamacare,” about 20 million Americans gained new access to health insurance. A central point of the reform is that people can no longer be denied insurance due to prior illnesses.

Preserving Obamacare is one of the main concerns of Biden, who was Obama’s vice president. During the election campaign, he promised that, as president, he would build on reform and, for example, reduce healthcare costs for Americans.

If Becerra is approved as health minister by the Senate, he will play a key role in Biden’s cabinet. The president-elect has made fighting the crown pandemic one of his priorities.

Last week, Biden named some members of his healthcare team: Disease expert Anthony Fauci should remain the government’s top crown adviser during Biden’s tenure. Fauci is a member of President Donald Trump’s Corona task force, who is still in office, but with whom he often crossed paths due to his politics of crisis.

Johns Hopkins University reported a new record for the number of new corona infections in the United States on Saturday for the third day in a row. More than 230,000 new infections were registered in 24 hours.

The United States is the country most affected by the pandemic in the world. In total, the United States has already recorded more than 14.6 million corona cases. More than 282,000 infected people died.
