Vöcklabrucker Spital becomes a liver surgery center

The previous year, OÖ Gesundheitsholding brought Stefan Stättner, an internationally recognized expert in liver, pancreas and biliary surgery, to the Salzkammergut Clinic. Starting in February, the 44-year-old will be the new primary physician in the department of surgery at the Gmunden and Vöcklabruck locations. Under his leadership, the Vöcklabruck Hospital will focus especially on this field of surgery. More than 40 operations were performed last year, some of which were very complex.

“The Salzkammergut Clinic is predestined for this very special and challenging type of surgery,” says Stättner. “On the one hand because Vöcklabruck has the necessary and very good equipment, on the other hand because excellent colleagues from the medical and nursing fields work here.”

Interventions in the liver are mainly necessary when it is necessary to remove tumors or tumor deposits from the organ by keyhole surgery or, if this is not possible, by open surgery. The decision to do this often depends on several factors. “It is not uncommon for operations to initially appear impractical due to the complex structure of the organ and the location of the tumor,” says Stättner. “However, we analyze each individual case very critically in an interdisciplinary group of experts. As soon as we recognize the slightest possibility, the risk is easily calculable and the procedure is accountable to the patient, we offer the appropriate surgical treatment.”
