Vaccination for over 80 years: registry with massive start problems

At 2:00 p.m., both the telephone lines and the country’s registration website were overloaded. At 2.30 pm, those responsible apparently pulled the emergency brake: the start of the vaccination record was postponed to 3.00 pm.

Only then can Upper Austrian people over the age of 80 who do not receive care in nursing homes register for corona vaccination, by calling 0732/7720 78 700 or online www.ooe-impft.at.

For vaccinations, which will begin on Tuesday, January 19, a total of 19 locations will be installed in the 18 districts of the country (see box). For the assignment to work, it’s important to register in your home district, Lt. Governor Christine Haberlander (VP) said Wednesday. However: All residents of Upper Austria over 80 years of age will not have the opportunity to receive the first round of vaccination. Haberlander estimates that around a third of all Upper Austrians over the age of 80 could get vaccinated in January. Currently no further doses of vaccine are available.

As reported, this also means that not all general practitioners can be vaccinated in the first phase. This is “incomprehensible”, protested the representative of the Upper Austrian Medical Association, Wolfgang Ziegler, in the OÖN. The president of the Federal Curia for resident doctors, Johannes Steinhart, joined yesterday and asked that doctors be included in the vaccination strategy.

In Upper Austria, according to the recommendations of the National Vaccination Committee, this will not happen. LH MP Haberlander said yesterday that they are aware of “the gratifying fact that many young people and different professional groups have registered their interest in a corona vaccination.” This willingness to vaccinate is “a positive sign.” But now the federal government is being asked to deliver more doses of vaccines.

The vaccination campaign in nursing homes in the country is already underway. Home vaccinations should be completed by the end of January. This week and next, around 2,600 employees will also be vaccinated in hospitals in Upper Austria. This means that around a sixth of the total of around 30,000 hospital employees will have been vaccinated by the end of next week.
