A 55-year-old woman was hit by a train with her car last night at a keyless level crossing in Schalchen, Upper Austria. The woman suffered fatal injuries.
According to the police, the woman from the Braunau district was driving her car down Feldweisstraße from the center of Schalchen (Upper Austria) in the direction of Unterlochen (Upper Austria) yesterday around 7 pm.

At the level crossing, which was not closed and secured with stop signs, the woman leaned into the train, which was driven by a 38-year-old driver from the Ried district of Upper Austria.

The 55-year-old man crossed the Braunau-Steindorf railway line without stopping. His car got stuck on the passenger side, got stuck in the shock absorber and was dragged about 180 meters, according to Upper Austrian police.

Braunau’s wife suffered fatal injuries and had to be rescued from the car by Schalchen firefighters with rescue scissors. The car driver, the train attendant and the five passengers were not injured. According to the police, there was significant damage to the wagon and total damage to the car. The Braunau – Steindorf railway line was closed to train traffic for about two hours.
