A doctor is said to have left the hospital at Kepler University Hospital (KUK) during a delicate operation. The patient passed away. The “Oö. Nachrichten” reported online. Therefore, the doctor was suspended, the incident must be investigated.
On Tuesday, the 77-year-old patient was taken to the Kepler Clinic and operated on due to an aortic rupture in the rescue helicopter, according to the article. However, the main doctor who conducted the procedure turned himself in to a colleague and left the hospital during a still critical phase of the operation, according to OÖN, citing internal sources. The main doctor reportedly should have had an appointment in his private practice. After the senior doctor left, the operation was difficult and the patient died.
It is “notable that there was a transfer to the medical assistant during the operation,” Andreas Zierer, head of the department of cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgery, told OÖN. “The exact circumstances of this installment are currently being analyzed.” However, he noted that “an emergency operation with a torn artery is associated with a high death rate of 15 to 20 percent.”
KUK Medical Director Ferdinand Waldenberger also confirms OÖN’s death. He entrusted an expert opinion from an expert sworn by the court, and the operator was suspended until the matter was clarified. At the moment, however, “there is no evidence of medical-technical misconduct,” Waldenberger said.
