FC Barcelona has barely avoided an embarrassing final in the quarterfinals of the Spanish Soccer Cup.
The Catalans lost 2-0 to Granada, two minutes before the end of regulation time. Antoine Griezmann then saved Barça with a goal (88th) and an assist from Jordi Alba (92th) in extra time. There the French returned to mark a blow and an assist. In the end it was 5-3 for Barça.
Alba also had two goals. Superstar Lionel Messi, on the other hand, left empty-handed. Frenkie de Jong scored the fifth Barça goal. Barcelona kept their hopes of winning a national title alive. In the League, Messi and company are already ten points behind the leader Atlético de Madrid in one more game.
Instead, Villarreal were trapped in the Cup. Salzburg’s rivals in the Europa League round of 16 had to admit a 1-0 defeat to Levante in extra time. Roger Martí scored the decisive goal in the 121st minute. Besides Barcelona and Levante, Sevilla FC are in the semi-finals. Betis Sevilla and Athletic de Bilbao will fight for the fourth inning on Thursday.
