Like many other online projects, this is also a Corona 2020 child of the year: Matthias Leitner and Jessica Reitzer started myPlatzerl.at in order to get sick local tourism back on its feet and against international platforms. Very fast, because on April 10, 2020, shortly after the start of Lockdown 1, the site was online and gathered over 400 accommodations by the end of 2020.
myPlatzerl.at reminds, of course, of an Austrian version of Airbnb, how could it be otherwise. But the big difference should be in the business model. Instead of a commission that vacation rental providers pay Airbnb, Expedia, and Booking.com per booking, Leitner and Reitzer want to be content with a listing fee that Austrian providers pay.
Listing fee instead of commission
For small companies with up to 30 beds, the presence on the platform costs ten euros per month, for larger companies with more beds it costs 20 euros. To do this, they also have to make the reservations themselves, because myPlatzerl does not want to interfere with the reservation and payment process, that is, where is the business model of the international travel giants.
The income from the listing fees is then partly invested in promoting the platform; after all, you have to make it known to attract tourists willing to travel to Austria and then forward them to listed companies. Only stays that are majority owned by Austria can be listed. Foreign residences in Austria are not allowed on the platform.
Expansion to include experiences, stores and events
The Salzburg couple, who work in the hotel industry, have already recognized that this can’t be all. Today, January 5, the couple will be performing at the 2 Minuten 2 Mio start-up show. von Puls 4 and will present the business idea to investors. And an offer update will be released. In the future, myPlatzerl should not only be able to find accommodation, but everything around it, including experiences, shops, restaurants and events. In addition to crown closures, suitable ski passes and rentals would be found for accommodation at a ski resort.
The additional offer of experiences and tours to match accommodation is already known by Airbnb – there the offer is called “Discoveries”. And on TripAdvisor, one of the world’s largest travel sites, you can find hotels, restaurants, vacation rentals, car rentals, and activities. So it will be exciting to see if myPlatzerl remains relevant to users when the crown factor with the focus on regionality fades and people return to the wider world.
The founders of myPlatzerl will appear in front of the investor jury for 2 minutes 2 million at the kick-off show on January 5 starting at 8:15 pm. You can find more information here:
