Students not exempt from compulsory practices – News

The Ministry of Education has rejected a request by the union and the Labor Chamber to exempt students from their summer internship this year.

Due to the Corona crisis, many students find it difficult to complete a mandatory internship this summer. The Labor Chamber and the union had asked to be released from this obligation.

Catch up allowed

The Ministry of Education has now given a rejection. Under the decree, however, it should be possible to offset the internship next year.

Due to the tense and uncertain situation, many companies are unable to offer internships this year, making it difficult for students to find a job.

“You shouldn’t be forced to look for meaningless places to do mandatory practices,” said AK President Renate Anderl.

She criticized the decree of the Ministry of Education. He stipulates that anyone who now receives rejections should continue to search, but if necessary they can do the internship again next year.

“Obligation to do an internship in a failed job search”

According to Anderl, however, it could be the case that students have to complete two internships in one summer. “That sounds like the obligation to do an internship on a failed job search,” says Anderl.

Every year, more than 50,000 schoolchildren from tourism schools, HAK, HTL, technical or commercial schools must complete an internship at a company in the summer.
