On the thirteenth day on Sunday, the number of newly infected people in 24 hours was just above the 4000 mark (4047). The decline in the reproductive factor is also encouraging, said Health Minister Rudi Anschober (Greens). Consequently, a person infected with corona only infects 0.88 people. The government wants to determine by Wednesday how the measures should continue after the harsh blockade.
Over the weekend, Anschober and Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (VP) asked to speak accordingly, probably to curb public expectations. The number of new infections remains dramatically high. The last week closed should lead to a “massive reduction”, said Anschober, for whom “the situation remains very serious.”
Because the current overload of intensive care units, whereby normal operation in many hospitals was halted, should not be permanent. Especially since the flu wave in December will bring significant additional burdens.
Hofer accuses failure
The Chancellor confirmed in the “Kleine Zeitung” that there would be “massive restrictions” even after December 7. In the case of the loosening in schools and for commerce, which had already been announced for some time, Kurz spoke of “careful opening steps” if the number of infections allows it. The government has not yet defined where the specific pain threshold is. Within the coalition, Kurz is considered a skeptic when it comes to the return of high school students to the classroom.
It should have been agreed for a long time that the closure of the restoration will last at least until Christmas. According to reports, the ban could even last until the turn of the year. The current private all-day curfew will apply from December 7 at night.
As Kurz anticipated, sports and leisure facilities will not be part of the first opening step. In the dispute over the pre-Christmas closure of the ski areas, the government presented its plans on Wednesday (more on this in the business section of ON). “Aprs-ski will return in a year at the earliest,” anticipated the chancellor.
Opening up the ski areas for day tourist excursions is considered realistic, as requested by the head of FP, Norbert Hofer. Their argument: Since there were no guests from abroad, there would be enough space on the slopes to keep their distance. In general, Hofer accused the government of a great failure in the crisis of the crown. Mass tests alone are “utter nonsense” because “many will be false positives,” Hofer said at the ORF’s “press hour.” The self-critical tones came from the governor of Styria, Hermann Schtzenhfer (VP). Politicians must “accept the charge that they did not assess the second wave correctly,” he said in the “Tiroler Tageszeitung”.
Unlike many days before, Upper Austria was not the state with the most new infections on Sunday. According to the Ministry of Health and the Interior, 647 were registered. In Lower Austria there were 762, in Styria 692. The number of people currently infected has decreased, the number of hospitals has stabilized over the weekend. 146 Covid-19 patients were in intensive care units in Upper Austria, 866 were hospitalized normally.
The number of deaths per corona was very high over the weekend. 13 were reported on Saturday and 10 on Sunday. However, 46 deaths from the previous weeks were also reported, for example, people who had been treated in other federal states and deaths at home.
