Sigi Maurer case: the owner withdraws the complaint, the witness Willi was there

On Wednesday, the process around a Vienna beer presenter and green politician Sigi Maurer moved on to the next and surprisingly final round. This time someone whose existence many had doubted appeared in court: the witness Willi. According to the brewer, he should be the one to send obscene messages to Maurer via social media from the local computer. However, the beer owner himself did not go to court and, surprisingly, even dropped the private lawsuit against Maurer and now has to pay the costs of the process.

His new lawyer, Gregor Klammer, announced in court that the beer manager had dropped the lawsuit because he had a feeling he couldn’t win anyway. It is a political decision.

Long process

As a reminder, the court has been handling the case for two years. Sigi Maurer had posted the insulting news on social media, thus revealing the identity of the beer’s owner. He then sued the green politician. He had nothing to do with the news and has been insulted ever since. Furthermore, its sales have collapsed. In fact, Maurer was found guilty in a first trial and fined 7,000 euros. The higher regional court later annulled the sentence and the process had to be repeated.

Willi doesn’t drink beer

In the next round of the process, the owner declared that his client Willi had sent the messages. But this Willi was shy and they couldn’t find him for months. At least until today. On Wednesday morning, he went to trial and commented on the accusations. He got up at 3 in the morning because he works as a craftsman in Upper Austria. He doesn’t want Maurer to be texted and he doesn’t even drink beer. He only learned from the subpoena that the landlord had named him as the alleged perpetrator. He really doesn’t know the host very well. He was also able to explain why he had not been there on the previous trial date: he suffered from severe back pain.

Sigi Maurer was acquitted on Wednesday, which is not yet legally binding. A victory with a flaw, because the president of the Green club would have liked to carry out the process.
