Austria’s youngest mayor leads the command in Kaltenleut dar.
Local politics can be just as appealing: Austria’s youngest mayor now rules in the trading city of 3,300 inhabitants in Kaltenleut near Mödling. Bernadette Schöny from ÖVP is only 27 years old. And the city boss is also smart.
Schöny began interfering in local politics ten years ago. At that time, the Youth Party was fighting for a beach volleyball court in the Viennese forest community. “This is how I got into politics,” says the 27-year-old, who has been recognized without reservation despite her almost teenage age.
The mayor continues to play on the volleyball court, weather permitting. Or when Gabriele Gerbasits, the deputy mayor of the Greens, backs her up again.
The two women remain an exception in the country’s local politics. Only nine percent of city council heads are women, and there are 180 mayors across the country. “Just trust!” Bernadette Schöny gives interested women along the way.
