“He has to go. He is a clear and present danger to the country,” Democrat Pelosi said in parliament on Wednesday.
The first step Wednesday was on the rules for the debate on the planned impeachment due to the assault on the Capitol by pro-Trump militants. The vote on the charge of “inciting a riot” was scheduled for 3:00 pm (local time; 9:00 pm CET).
“Domestic terrorists”
Trump has incited “national terrorists” to fight his electoral defeat, Pelosi said. “You didn’t come out of a void.” Trump was guilty of “inciting a riot.” For this he must be held accountable.
Trump also bears “responsibility” for the violent assault on the Capitol by his supporters, according to House Republican Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. McCarthy said in parliament that it was wrong to remove him from office with an expedited procedure in the last days of his term. The impeachment against the Republican would further increase political divisions in the country, he warned.
“The president is not without blame. The president is responsible for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by a seditious mob,” McCarthy said. Trump should have “condemned” the mob immediately after the attack began, he said. US media reported that Trump’s loyal ally McCarthy was unable to get the president to speak on the phone during the attack on Capitol Hill.
The majority in the parliamentary chamber is considered safe
A majority in the Democratic-controlled parliamentary chamber is deemed safe to initiate the impeachment process. Individual Republicans also announced that they would vote to remove their colleagues from the party. However, the final decision on impeachment is made in the Senate, the other House of Congress. It would take a two-thirds majority to convict Trump. For that to happen, more than a dozen Republican senators would have to side with the Democrats. Individual Republicans in the Senate have openly opposed Trump, but so far have not accepted his impeachment.
A possible vote on impeachment in the United States Senate will not take place this week, according to Trump’s Republicans. A spokesman for Majority Leader Mitch McConnell confirmed on Twitter a Washington Post report Wednesday that the House of Congress would not be called for an extraordinary session. The next meeting should take place on Tuesday, one day before the end of Trump’s term.
The House of Representatives was expected to formally file charges against Trump on Wednesday in connection with the assault on the Capitol. The decision on an actual impeachment rests with the Senate. It is not clear if there will be enough votes for it. Earlier, citing an insider, it had been said that Republicans in the US Senate would consider a possible vote on impeachment on Friday.
Ban Trump for future offices
Joe Biden will be sworn in as the new president of the United States on January 20. Impeachment efforts by Democrats also seek to ban Trump from future government offices. This would mean that he would not be allowed to run for president in 2024. Trump would be the first president in US history to initiate two impeachment processes. Then the process itself takes place in the Senate. It would take a two-thirds majority, which is very difficult to achieve, for impeachment.
