70 percent of the sports facilities in Vienna need a renovation. The city now has 150 million euros for this and for four new buildings.

Sports Councilor Peter Hacker (SPÖ), Green Sports spokesperson Hans Arsenovic and MA 51 – Sports Vienna director Anatol Richter presented the sports facilities development plan “Sport. Vienna. 2030” on Thursday. Based on this concept, in the next few years about 150 million euros will be allocated to the renovation of existing sports facilities and the construction of new ones.

New multifunctional sports hall in Kagran

Among other things, a multifunctional sports hall for 3,000 spectators focused on ball sports and three lightweight training rooms will be built in Kagran. Infrastructure for swimmers in the stadium pool and other pools is being expanded, and the city’s round corridors are being completely renovated. More pump tracks and ballcourt cages will be installed in public spaces. The comprehensive renovation program of the city’s club sports facilities includes the construction of new cloakroom buildings, the construction of additional playing fields, the renovation of floodlights and roof renovations. When expanding into currently unused auxiliary areas, multiple use by hobbies and popular sports should be ensured.

To determine the needs of a popular, competitive and high-level sport, MA 51 – Sport Vienna launched a comprehensive survey of more than 70 Viennese professional associations and their clubs. Over 200 responses from nearly every recognized sport made it clear that additional training opportunities were needed, especially for indoor sports. Ball sport clubs and associations also expressed the need for a larger hall for national and international sporting competitions.

70 percent of the sports facilities in Vienna need a renovation.

In order to obtain a solid basis for the sports facility concept, the existing sports facilities were also examined in detail. This analysis of the technical state carried out in 2019 yielded the following result:

– 30 percent of the sports facilities in the city are in good structural and technical condition.

– 70 percent require renovation measures in various forms, from renovations to general renovations or renovations.

In focus: new buildings and modernization

From these two steps, an investment program was developed that includes the following central fields of action:

Modernization of sports facilities:

– Comprehensive renovation of sports facilities in urban stock

– General renovation of the round rooms owned by the city of Vienna: the pilot project Steigenteschgasse in Kagran is already being implemented; the other six round rooms will also receive a new roof, new exterior decks, new technology and additional training platforms

New sports facility:

– Construction of a multifunctional sports hall with a spectator capacity of around 3,000 people: flexible use for training sessions and competitions thanks to retractable and extendable grandstands – three large training fields possible in parallel – adjoining rooms for events and training

– Construction of smart training rooms: different uses from athletics and gymnastics to ball and fashion sports – Smart training modules allow to extend training times – Quick implementation thanks to lightweight construction

Expansion of sports facilities:

– Expansion of existing sports facilities in the city of Vienna, for example, the Vienna Athletics Center in the Prater and in football in Floridsdorfer AC, Wiener Viktoria, SC Simmering

– Creation of additional swimming infrastructure in the stadium pool: additional 50m pool, retractable roof and construction of buildings instead of air dome for winter. The first press release will start this year: the city of Vienna will present specific projects for the sports facilities development plan. Numerous projects are already underway to reduce energy consumption through MA 51 – Sport Wien’s “Sportcontracting” financing program.

In development: the future of Viennese sport

The sports facilities development plan also aims to take into account the growth of the city. In order to achieve the goal of a comprehensive, affordable and easily accessible sports offering for all Viennese in the future, the following measures are being developed or planned:

– Sports clubs already use more than 500 school gyms in Vienna, 140 of them also on weekends. In the coming years, these options will expand even further, including during school holidays.

– In urban development projects, it is ensured that, based on a needs analysis, there is enough space available for sports infrastructure.

– The diversity of the sports and urban exercise infrastructure becomes even more visible and tangible. Recreational areas are included in the general concept.

– In the course of a projection, potential areas of around 56,000 square meters were named in around 50 sports facilities of the MA 51, which are available for future multiple uses.

Numbers, facts and facts about sport in Vienna

Vienna has almost 10 million square meters of sports space; local recreation areas such as the Danube Island, the Marchfeld Canal or the Green Prater are not even considered.
