Following Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens), Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (VP) has now announced that there will be country-specific adjustments in the fight against the corona virus, as well as other national regulations.
A video conference between the federal government and the federal states will take place on Monday. It should serve “so that we can discuss the next steps together and take appropriate action in the federal government and in the federal states,” Kurz explained. The reason for Monday’s federal-state video conference is the increasing number of infections in Austria. The current infection situation and other measures will be discussed between Chancellor Kurz, Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Green), Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Green), Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (VP) and the governors. “The situation is getting worse across Europe, and the number of federal states affected in Austria with the increase in new infections is also increasing,” Kurz recalled in a written statement.
Presentation still on Monday?
“The videoconference with the representatives of the federal states is intended to allow us to discuss the next steps together and take the right actions in the federal government and in the federal states,” Kurz said, responding to further tightening of the population. The Foreign Ministry has not yet given an answer to the question of what they would be; discussions are still ongoing, he said. After the video conference on Monday, you can expect a press conference with the presentation of new measures.
In any case, Kurz stressed that the only way to stop the increase in infections is by reducing social contacts, “which of course means giving up all of us.” The more infections there are, the greater the challenge not only for the health system, but also the threat to employment and burdens for companies, the chancellor warned. “Currently we are seeing in other European countries that after a certain level of infection contact tracing no longer works and leads to an increasing number and conditions similar to those of blockade. We want to avoid that in Austria,” Kurz said.
“I need the cohesion of spring again”
The Chancellor appealed to the population to need “the cohesion of spring, which was our success factor in protecting against the first wave.” How Austria manages to cope with or defend against the second wave now depends on the next few weeks and everyone’s discipline. In particular, leisure behavior is of crucial importance, as most new infections are currently in the private sector, Kurz warned. “Even if the virus does not hit you yourself, a growing number of infections can affect people in your family, friends or work environment due to poor economic development. Therefore, determination, unity and solidarity are needed throughout the country.” Kurz said.
“Focus on regional measures”
Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Grne) had previously announced a nationwide tightening on Thursday night. This is currently being resolved, he said on “ZiB 2” Thursday night. When asked about the schedule, he said: “I would not rule out that it could be in the next few days.” A “blockage” like in the spring should be avoided. At the moment, “the absolute focus is on regional measures,” Anschober said, referring to the tightening in Tyrol and Salzburg established on Thursday. These new regional measures are “on point”. He also expects tightening in other federal states, for example Upper Austria “will again tighten regionally tomorrow,” the minister said. It was already known that Upper Austria could, among other things, cope with the introduction of compulsory guest registration in restaurants and an extension of protective measures in nursing homes and nursing homes.
“Working on additional federal measures”
“But yes, we will also need additional federal measures to protect ourselves against the pandemic – we are working on that right now,” Anschober said. It depends on “the right time”. “Now we are working out the measures, looking at the figures. Now it is the turn of the regional measures, then we will take more measures.” The deciding factor is “that the population participates,” Anschober said, also in the face of the Hallein reports, where individuals did not adhere to the guidelines.

A “blockade” must be avoided, the minister emphasized once again: “I can assure you, we have enshrined in law that there can only be a blockade if the main committee (of the National Council, note) agrees and the Austrian collapses We are taking all measures to avoid a closure. “
When asked if a night curfew was conceivable, as in Paris, for example, Anschober said: “We want to avoid that too. I want to do everything possible to avoid something similar to what we had in spring.”
Curfew as “legitimate method”
Regarding concrete measures such as bringing a national curfew, Anschober said: “That is also the subject of our controls. The curfew can be a legitimate method when it comes to reducing a certain polluting zone. If there is a increased alcoholism, there is an increased risk. I thought it was very reasonable for individual federal states to introduce curfew. “

It also indicated an end to visors, which are used mainly in gastronomy instead of mouth and nose protection: it is known from studies that protection against mouth and nose protection is “drastically reduced”. For this reason, measures are already being prepared so that the mask “that is on the side, that this is the means of our actions in Austria in the future”.
