Gradual opening of schools until June 3 and shift work

Six weeks after the school closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, Education Minister Heinz Famann (VP) presented the timetable for the reopening on Friday morning.

  • Elementary and middle school students start on May 18, the rest on June 3.
  • Students are divided into classes, there is a shift operation
  • There is no school work
  • Volksschler can’t sit still this year
  • Gymnastics and music classes are canceled.

“Social distance and hygiene standards are difficult to maintain in a school building,” said Famann. Therefore, there will be a shift operation. This means that the classes must be divided into two groups of the same size. One part must have classes from Monday to Wednesday, the other from Thursday to Friday. There is a change every week.

On non-teaching days, students have “homework days,” Famann explained. These can also be completed at school. There will continue to be support at school, for example in Turnslen. However, the Minister of Education asks parents to take care of their children at home, if possible, during the free period of classes.

It is already known that graduates or final classes will return to vocational middle schools and vocational schools from May 4.

Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (VP) recently announced that the other school levels should continue in stages from May 15. There must be hygiene standards as a mask requirement outside of class.
