Unified Geological Map

For the first time, the Unified Geological Map of the Moon shows all known surface structures and landscape shapes from Earth’s satellite on a single map.

Although the moon is orbited by various space probes and is arguably the best astronomical object in space, science has been able to gain new insights into the Earth’s satellite in recent years. This includes, for example, geological activities that trigger contraction processes and make the moon smaller and smaller, as well as a mass anomaly that is likely caused by a metallic asteroid nucleus.
A complete map with detailed geological information about the moon does not yet exist, although this is essential for building a lunar base. Apollo mission data as a base
The scientists used six existing maps of individual regions of the moon as the basis for creating the map, which in turn were based on data from the Apollo missions based. Maps published in 2013 were first re-evaluated to current standards and then combined to form an overall map. The creators standardized the existing names and added new data for the Lunar Orbiter, the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, and the Japanese Selenium probe.
