Others warned that low-income people cannot afford expensive masks.
Only this Monday the leader of the parliamentary group of the CDU in Baden-Württemberg, Wolfgang Reinhart, criticized the prices of FFP2 masks. “I call on pharmacists and retailers to sell FFP2 masks for a maximum of one euro per mask. In any case, they shouldn’t be sold for more than 10 percent of the purchase price, ”Reinhart said in Stuttgart on Monday. The CDU politician sees Austria as a role model on the subject of masks.
From this Monday, the FFP2 mask is also mandatory in the neighboring country. However, most supermarkets want to make it available to Austrian consumers for free. This was initially announced by Rewe, and other supermarkets and discount stores followed suit. In some cases, the offer is limited to one skin per customer.
In Germany, apparently, there are no such plans so far. When asked by FAZ, shopkeepers Lidl, Rewe, and Penny replied that they wanted to sell FFP2 masks for 0.99 cents each in the future. This would be cheaper than at some online retailers and pharmacies.
According to the Idealo price comparison portal, both the prices of FFP2 masks and so-called surgical masks have dropped in recent weeks. The price of FFP2 masks fell 37 percent in January compared to last November, and 15 percent for surgical masks. Demand increased sharply – a good 1,300 percent since November.
