Fassmann’s School Strategy: “Rapid tests are an essential safety net”

Did you even consider installing ventilation systems in schools before last summer?

We should have installed ventilation systems in 5800 schools. Some suggestions sound sensible when you first hear them, but when you think about them, they are unworkable. And there is a study from Hessen that says very simply: open the windows, it is much more efficient and easier.

What else is being considered? Share classes and teach mornings and afternoons?

In reality, only one shift is possible, a division of classes, a group on Monday, another on Tuesday, and so on. Other proposals such as morning classes with half a class and evening classes with the other half would mean doubling the number of teachers. Where to get it The variant with a safety net through many tests is more realistic.

Don’t we need a 10th year of school to make up for the loss of education? There is also a suggestion from the Lower Austrian Director of Education to simply increase the number of teaching hours in the coming years.

Anyway, we do more lessons, for example through remedial and supplemental lessons. But we will do it more specifically. It is important that we help those who have developed educational deficits, which I do not want to deny at all. Therefore, there will be compensatory measures, for example, in the semester and the Easter holidays and, on a large scale, in the summer holidays. I will inform you about this specifically. For this alone we are taking more than 100 million euros in our hands.

And how are teachers supposed to rate now, apparently the first blue letters are already being submitted?

This works as soon as teachers have enough material to be able to evaluate a performance, for example participating in distance learning. Some participate more, others less.

However, a normal Matura can hardly be produced. Or should the Matura be canceled?

So only a few countries reject it. The completion of the secondary level is important because they represent the entrance certificates to the universities, if in theory the Matura were abolished, the universities would certainly install entrance exams.

On the other hand, many students are under enormous pressure because they are constantly video chats and trying to work on material.

What is becoming increasingly clear is the quality of teaching in the classroom. The explanation of the content of the new material can be made much clearer through personal contact. Distance learning, video calls and assignments through learning platforms serve to deepen knowledge; face-to-face teaching is much more necessary to develop new ideas.

Do you rule out that the holidays are cut?

I rule out that, in a situation where everything is uncertain, we cannot deprive people of the last anchors of their safe life.
