Mönchengladbach – Tuesday, March 2, 2021, 10:41 pm
Borussia Dortmund are in the semifinals of the DFB Cup! BVB won 1-0 in the quarter-finals in Borussia’s duel against Mönchengladbach and future coach Marco Rose. Dortmund have achieved a cup victory in Gladbach for the first time on the third attempt.
The game in Mönchengladbach begins turbulent: Thuram misses the first big opportunity after just two minutes and maneuvers the ball from six meters just past the goal. In minute 5 the first change in BVB: Guerreiro has to be injured.
After that, the game is tough for long periods, both teams allow themselves a lot of inaccuracies, the pace is poor. For Dortmund, Haaland missed the best opportunity in the first half (36th), the alleged leadership of Gladbach by Thuram is denied by offside (45th + 1).
In the 55th minute the ball twisted back into the net, completed by Haaland after Reus’ preparatory work. The hit is not given for lack of the former Salzburg player on Bensebaini.
After a vertiginous combination of BVB on Haaland and Reus, the decisive goal fell, which also counts: Sancho remains cold in front of the Gladbach Sippel goalkeeper and hits the inside pole (66th). In the end, Haaland is still on track to 2-0, but fails because of Sippel (83rd).
In the third minute of injury time, Dahoud had to leave the field for BVB after a foul on Bensebaini with yellow and red. ÖFB legionnaire Stefan Lainer missed the goal with the last shot.
Lainer plays through Gladbach’s side, Valentino Lazaro enters in the 68th minute, Hannes Wolf in the 76th minute.
Since Rose made the decision to move to Dortmund in the summer two weeks ago, things have gone downhill for the Gladbach team: Tuesday’s cup failure against Rose’s future club is the fourth consecutive competitive loss since then. The Gladbachers now have to start a race to catch up in the Bundesliga and qualify for the European Cup. In the round of 16 of the Champions League, after the 0-2 in the first leg against Manchester City, the end threatens.
