Fallout 76 is legendary in gaming communities, but certainly not for the reasons developer and publisher Bethesda would have liked it. The buggy “Fallout 76” videos are pretty much a separate genre on YouTube, and sales pretty much did it all with each new step to further annoy already skeptical fans: mold-ridden product helmets, non-collectible editions. of the advertised quality matched, and raw ideas like Fallout 1st premium membership, which also resulted in numerous skits. But after a long wait, Bethesda “Fallout 76” donated the biggest and most important update in its history: the Wastelanders update.
First Bethesda boasted: “Fallout 76” appeared completely without NPC. Bethesda wanted to sell this to players as an advantage, because it should allow players to write their own story without being disturbed in the online title. The result was a large but empty game world, which had to convey its stories through environmental storytelling, which in the long run seemed quite sad.
Additionally, many players complained to the community at the release of “Fallout 76”. PvP wasn’t thought through to the end and basically barely interested anyone, which probably surprised Bethesda a lot. There were also many individual players who weren’t enthusiastic about cooperation either and tried to play “Fallout 76” as a classic game in the series. By the way, this is a phenomenon that I also discovered while playing “The Elder Scrolls Online”. Large parts of the players act as in a single player RPG, carry out their missions on their own and pay little attention to other players. But that’s also the fan base that Bethesda has grown over the years with its open-world titles.
But let’s go back to the free update to Wastelanders, which changes a lot “Fallout 76”: because it presents NPC and, of course, numerous new stories. Will the RPG memes end and will players embrace Bethesda again? Difficult question that you probably cannot answer in this sample. For the first time, I took a closer look at “Fallout 76” myself. Before that, Todd Howard couldn’t lure me in with his “16 times the detail” parody promise. I preferred to console myself with “The Outer Worlds”.
Many of you may feel the same way and after the Wastelanders update you are now evaluating whether “Fallout 76” is still worth checking out. Short answer: at the current price of the game, which varies between 10 and 25 euros depending on the retailer and the platform, you can say yes. However, when the game hit the market at full price in late 2018, this recommendation could not have been given. However, “Fallout 76” will not run properly in 2020 and after the Wastelanders update. Bethesda’s near-classic bugs can still be found on the moor from time to time, and I don’t mean irradiated beetles.
An NPC trembles epileptically through Wallachia, or an opponent prefers to look dreamily at the horizon while rushing rather than defending myself. Teleporting is also a skill that is no stranger to people (and animals) in the “Fallout 76” world and is used sporadically. However, most of these mistakes have been quite fun for me and have not slowed down my progress. I did not have to fight with missing items, unsolved missions or accidents. I also tried “Fallout 76” on the Xbox One X cannot say anything about other platforms.
The Wastelanders update not only features NPCs scattered throughout the game world, but also companions and two factions – the settlers and the raiders. You can complete missions for both, you just have to choose one of both sides towards the end. Until then, you can and should run on two tracks to carry the whole story with you. The new NPCs that can accompany you also bring search lines and their own stories.
BTW, it gets stupid for players who, unlike me, want to play “Fallout 76” and the Wastelanders story is updated not only, but (as originally envisioned by Bethesda) in multiplayer mode. Per se, of course. But progress is not shared and the one who invited others always has a voice. The only advantage is that you can experience the main quest with friends multiple times from different perspectives and have the option to see the consequences of different decisions.
Seen or rather, I heard “Fallout 76” mostly in English, because I mainly enjoy English games due to the 99.9% higher quality setting. But I also looked and listened to the German dub and the German texts. I was not impressed with what was offered, especially since the emphasis on German speakers often seemed very uncertain or even inappropriate, presumably because there was very little information about the context in which the respective language fragments are sometimes used.
After the Wastelanders and the ability to interact with NPCs, “Fallout 76” now offers a much livelier game world, which should have been the case a year and a half ago when the game launched. There are even casual encounters, a tradition of the series. There you will find, for example, street vendors and other figures that present pleasant or unpleasant surprises. At times, “Fallout 76” almost feels like “Fallout 5”.
But that’s also the catch: “in a few moments” or, at best, you forget that this is an online game and wonder why Bethesda didn’t directly pump resources to a fifth. Instead, you tried to unnecessarily stretch your brand and ultimately ruined it with a lot of fans. It was worth it? The Wastelanders update actually saves a lot, but a year and a half after launch it comes too late.
New companions bring their own quests and can move to the camp after setting certain items that attract them, so to speak, but they are not allowed to fight. It is also a shame that only one of the new companions can visit the camp, be it the former astronaut Sofia, a wasteland punk, a hiker, a collector or the former bandit Beckett. If you want to exchange one of the residents for another, you must first take apart the appropriate item and replace it with another, inconvenient one.
“Fallout 76” is fun after the Wastelanders update in its current state, but it’s still a game that should never have existed in its original form anyway, especially not at full price. And even now you should take a critical look at the monetization options through the Atomic Store and Fallout 1st.
If, like me, you loved the previous “Fallout” games and got the game for a fair price of less than 20 euros, I think in any case you can now spend a few hours entertaining in this title.
