The cup has its own laws – this wisdom was demonstrated once again on Wednesday night. Second division Holstein Kiel eliminated big favorite Bayern Munich on penalties.

Bayern lost 5: 6 (2: 2, 2: 2, 1: 1) in the third second division Holstein Kiel on penalties and for the first time in 17 years lost in the DFB Cup against a lower-ranked team.
Serge Gnabry from the offside position (minute 14) made it 1-0 for the guests. The outsider from the north came to equalize in the first half through Fin Bartels (37º).

Leroy Sané (48th) with a free kick again put the favorites ahead. Kiel’s selfless struggle did not give way in the second half and was rewarded with the tie in injury time with a blow from Hauke Wahl (90º + 5).
There were no more blows in extra time, so the penalty shoot-out brought the decision. After the first 5 shooters from both teams hit everyone, Kiel goalkeeper Ioannis Gelios stopped Marc Rocca’s shot, and Bartels confidently converted against national goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Historic defeat of Bayern
After 33 away cup victories, Bayern suffered their first defeat in Kiel: on March 4, 2009, the Munich team lost a DFB Cup match in a foreign stadium for the last time. Back then with 2: 4 at Bayer Leverkusen. Against a lower class team, the Munich team was last eliminated in February 2004 when they failed in the quarterfinals with 1: 2 in Alemannia Aachen.

Kiel now have home rights in the next round against SV Darmstadt 98, who also play in the second division. The round of 16 is for the 2nd / 3rd. Scheduled February. The quarter-finals should take place on 2/3. It will take place in March, the semi-finals on 1/2. May. The final in Berlin will begin on May 13.
For Bayern, winning the new three-pointers of the championship, the Champions League and the cup is no longer possible from the beginning.
