In several Dutch cities, there were riots again on Monday night due to the new night curfew to contain the corona pandemic. In the city of Rotterdam and the southern city of Geleen near Maastricht, there were clashes between security forces, police and media reported. The police used water cannons against the protesters.
In Geleen there are “clashes between riot police and youths who shoot fireworks at them,” local police said on Twitter. One person was arrested. There were also arrests in Rotterdam, as the city administration tweeted.
On Sunday violent riots broke out in several cities in the Netherlands. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte condemned the behavior of the rioters, who, among other things, looted shops, set cars on fire and a coronavirus testing station. Rutte spoke of “criminal violence” that had spread during protests in several cities. According to Dutch media reports, the police arrested about 250 participants in the protests.
The curfew between 9:00 pm and 4:30 am went into effect on Saturday. Violations are punishable by a fine of 95 euros. It is the first curfew in the EU country since World War II.
