Swiss Post closed 2020 with a new package record. Last year, packaging carriers shipped a good third more parcels in Austria than in 2019: 165 million pieces.
Above all, the online shopping boom and CoV pandemic ensured that Austrians were ordering and shipping more. In 2019 it was 127 million, the Post announced Monday.
Purchases moved to the Internet
The number from ten years ago, 2009, on the other hand, seems modest: back then it was just 50 million packages. The state industry leader justified the record with the fact that many have moved their purchases to the Internet due to blackouts, especially during the holiday season.
The parcel industry is subject to strong seasonal fluctuations. As the Post explained, around 555,000 packages were transported through Austria on average days. In December, this number increased to more than 800,000 a day, and the million was broken every day.
1.3 million packages transported on December 7
“On December 7, 1.3 million packages were transported in a single day. Compared to this, the daily record that was set in 2019 seems relatively low: at that time, 765,000 packages were distributed in one day for the first time, ”Swiss Post said in its mail.
However, the numbers are only part of the onslaught of packages. In addition to the Post, competitors GLS, UPS, dpd and Co. are also recording ever-increasing volumes. In addition, the number one in online retail, Amazon, now delivers many packages with its partners.
Millions of investors in Paketlogistik
In order to cope with the increasing parcel volumes, the Post is building a new parcel logistics center at Vomp in Tyrol this year and expanding that of Allhaming in Upper Austria and Wolfurt in Vorarlberg. In addition, 20 delivery bases will be new and another 20 will be expanded. In 2021 alone, around 100 million euros will be invested in expanding parcel logistics, the Post announced.
