Coronavirus also enters the body through the eye

Corona virus can also be absorbed through the eyes and the lacrimal gland.

Covid-19 continues to keep the world on hold, but of course the new virus continues to occupy science. The main route of transmission is infection by droplets, for example, through cough patients. Previous studies suggest that the coronavirus is mainly absorbed through the nose. Researchers at the renowned Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have discovered another way. Consequently, the SARS-CoV-2 virus can also be absorbed through the eyes.

ACE-2 receivers

Scientists found so-called input proteins in the corneal cells of the eyes. The coronavirus binds to ACE-2 receptors known as “gateways” in body cells. These receptors are found in the airways and lungs, where the virus first infiltrates cells and then other organs. American researchers have now discovered that the eyes also produce ACE-2 receptors, making them a target for the virus.

If the infected drops fall into the eye, the coronavirus can begin to infiltrate. This would also explain why some crown patients suffer from conjunctivitis, scientists continue. The virus can not only enter the body through the eyes, but tears can also spread the infection.

The research team was led by Lingli Zhou of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Eye Clinic in Baltimore.

They analyzed ten human postmortem eyes from people who had not died of COVID-19 for the expression of ACE2 (angiotensin-converting enzyme 2).
