Champions League

Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain advanced to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Wednesday. As in the first duel with RB Leipzig, the English champions achieved a 2-0 (0-0) win in Budapest, PSG rose thanks to a 1-1 at home (1: 1) against FC Barcelona. The Frenchman won the first leg at the Camp Nou 4-1. On Tuesday, FC Porto and Borussia Dortmund reached the round of 16.

The Leipzigers would have liked to keep BVB company in the quarter-finals, but they were relatively far from being a surprise against Liverpool. The “Reds” had better chances in the first half: Diogo Jota, who was used for the sick Roberto Firmino, failed against RB goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi (19, 41) and hit the outside net (45 + 1). Mohammed Salah also found his teacher in Gulacsi (24).

The Leipziger, in which captain Marcel Sabitzer played, had shots from Dani Olmo (10th / Alisson stopped) and Emil Forsberg (32nd / next to him) to offer before the break and they were able to thank Gulacsi again shortly after the break. The Hungarian saved the free Jota, Salah put the margin on the door (54º).

Leipzig responded with a picket header from Alexander Sörloth (65th), but soon had to bury their last hopes. Salah completed a perfectly played counterattack after Jota worked (70th), and Sadio Mane did it after a cross from Divock Origi (74th). Liverpool thus regained their confidence after the last six consecutive defeats at home in the Premier League.

Barcelona still unrewarded in Paris

A little closer than Leipzig, Barcelona sniffed a surprise. The Catalans were presented as the strongest team against PSG from the beginning and missed good chances through Ousmane Dembélé (14./Saved Jesús Navas) and Sergino Dest (23./Latte). The lead of the finalist from the previous year fell against the course of the game. Clement Lenglet accidentally stepped on Mauro Icardi’s heel in the penalty area, and Kylian Mbappé (30th) took advantage of the penalty imposed by the video assistant.

In the 34th minute Dembélé failed again in Navas, but three minutes later the goalkeeper was defeated. Lionel Messi hit the Kreuzeck from a good 20 yards. Shortly before the break, the Argentine could have made it really exciting, but his penalty was blocked by Navas at the crossbar.

Who knows what would have been possible for Barça if Messi had not given the penalty at the end of the first half

In the second half, PSG limited itself to managing the lead, but Barça no longer exuded the danger of the first 45 minutes. The Spanish runners-up were mostly toothless, except for one shot from Messi, who failed to complete all five. This means that Messi is no longer in the quarter-finals of the “queen category”, as is Cristiano Ronaldo, who had already said goodbye to FC Porto with Juventus on Tuesday.
